Petrol is a better term for it. Gas is just dumb
Petrol was once a trade name for refined petroleum spirits; I looked it up.
So you are correct, gas might not be the most accurate word and petrol is perhaps better. At least in GB. Petrol is a generic term for gasoline across the pond and I am American, Dag Nabbit. Real men call gas, gas.
Unfortunately, there is no more real Petrol/Gas; it went the way of the dinosaurs, which is quite ironic, I suppose. I miss high octane gas/Petrol because my 1960 Olds Super 88 has trouble drinking the Petrol/gas that passes for gas/Petrol. All we have is gas/Petrol flavored Petrol/Gas; both are unworthy of the name, er, names. Yes, I know, I said gas passing, so the gas passing or Fart jokes will likely follow.
But do not use the word Fart, I smell gas related troubles:
