Why can't he just do what other Chinese people do and buy a rip-off instead.

Because many of the knock-offs are junk. I still find it quite amazing what they'll try and pass off as an 'iPhone'.

You can't use the full capabilities of the iPad in that country anyways.

Of course one can use an iOS device to its full potential in China. Perhaps not the Twitter and Facebook trivialities, but those the only things which will not work here.

In places they limit GPS. Not sure if that is the case for China, but I assume this is what he was going for. Then there is that internet censorship bit. I don't actually know how bad it really is. I just go by what the media decides is prudent to report.
