Class 10 MicroSD transferringslow through USB

shawn7656

Lurker
I bought a new class 10 Samsung 32gb MicroSD from Amazon (not a store on Amazon, but Amazon) and I've run SDTools tests and gotten class 10-like results. However, when I use USB Mass Storage I get a top transfer speed of about 1.5MB/s

I've tried SD Speed Increase, I've updated my drivers on my computer, I've tried different USB ports, I've tried different USB cables, I've tried flashing a different kernel (which resulted in a black screen, so I guess I don't know if this is a valid option), and I've tried the multi-mount app which didn't actually do anything (I clicked the widget repeatedly and nothing happened). I also tried connecting the card up through a USB adapter directly but it isn't recognized by my computer. MTP mode is nowhere to by found on AOKP, so I can't try it. On CM9 when I clicked it, it would just move back to Mass Storage when I plugged it in.

These are all of the fixes I have found while scouring the web for the last two days. My class 2 8gb that came with my phone went faster than this.

Phone info:
Evo 4G (supersonic)
Started this all out on JMZs CM9, but I heard CM9 had problems with transfer speeds, so now I'm running AOKP build 33 - All links to more recent supported version for my phone are dead (except Milestone 6, which isn't even supposed to be out for my phone, so I shied away from it).

My goal is to put roughly 20 gigs of music onto this card, and I will not wait for that to happen at 1MB/s. I thought of doing the transfer over WiFi but that seems like it'll be a PITA and probably not much faster because my internet speeds are pretty slow.

I made a thread on XDA but no one has offered any suggestions so I figured I'd try here as well.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

EDIT: This is a picture of the card info, can anyone tell me if it's just a fake Samsung card? It'd be lovely if that was the only problem

UPDATE: interesting discovery - If I go into recovery mode and enable USB MS I get speeds around 5MB/s

Welcome to the forums shawn7656!

Hopefully i can shed some light on this issue of yours :)

Anyhow i did some reading here: SD Card Speeds

Yeah something is definitely wrong with the speeds there, did you ever think that maybe it was just a bad card, i know this happens sometimes, and you wouldn't be the first person to have this happen to them :S

Yeah I contacted Amazon about it and they didn't really comment on it being real or fake, they just asked if I'd like a replacement or a refund.

Maybe I'll do a replacement... It's just annoying to wait for the shipping twice.

Just flashed the Mason Kernel again as I found I used the wrong one before. It's booting up now so we'll see what happens.

(...)

Nothing. 1.5MB/s dropped to 1 in about 30 seconds.

I'm half tempted to see if it's just the ROMs I'm using and flash in a legit GB release or something...

It seems to me that if the card gets speeds around 5MB/s in recovery mode then it's more than likely something with the software that's bogging down the speed. Obviously, I should be getting faster speeds than 5MB/s, but I'd rather have that than 1MB/s or less...

I've spent too much time on this today and haven't accomplished anything yet. Time to get off the computer for awhile. Hopefully one of you genius forumites know something I don't!

You should be getting speeds way faster than 5MB/s

I doubt it would be something related to the system you are running, i would just get a replacement from Amazon.

Sorry about your luck :(

Hey shawn i did some quick searching around on amazon

This is a review i read about your SD card:
My card only writes at 6 MB/s and reads at about 18 MB/s. Apparently it's hit or miss according to the reviews. Well, mine missed and I paid way too much for a Class 6 card. Returning it was easy enough, but I'm still irritated. Your mileage may vary. In my opinion this is either a 1 star or 5 star product. It works as advertised or it doesn't. 1 star for this wanna be class 10 card.

Update: To avoid confusion... Amazon sometimes combines reviews for many different brands into one group. That is currently the case here for these micro sdhc cards. You'll see reviews for Samsung, Lexar and the Komputerbay brand cards all mixed up in these reviews. To clarify, My review is for the Komputerbay brand class 10 card. In fact, I replaced it with the Lexar class 10 W/USB version, (obtained elsewhere) and everything is great. The Lexar writes at 12 MB/s and reads at 22 MB/s

Yeah I think I saw that one too. Maybe I'll grab a SanDisk one as a replacement. It's a couple bucks cheaper, but I figured Samsung would be better quality and less likely to be fake.

Got a Sandisk 32gb class 10 from Amazon. $23.
Performs very well. Getting the speeds they claim.
Always go with Sandisk cards, at least I do.

Honestly, I think its just the ROM you are using not having proper speeds. If you want to know if the card is at fault and not the phone, just get a card reader. However IMO its a combination of the phone and a problem in the ROM. One is that as far as I know, currently no phone can access a card faster than Class 6 speed, due to hardware limitations. Now, anything slower than that can either be attributed to faulty drivers (ROM problem) or a faulty card. Test it on a card reader to eliminate ROM issues, and if it gives you class 10 speed, you know your problem.

I've heard about the class 6 limitation, and I would be fine at class 6 speeds, but I'm not even getting class 2 speeds.

When I put the card in the supplied SD adapter, and then put it in a USB card reader my computer says I need to format the card to use it, and doesn't recognize the card at all (doesn't know the size, won't let me format to FAT32). This happens with my 8gb that came with my phone too, so it's possibly the microSD to SD adapter that's faulty, because the card reader works with normal SD cards.

**

Tested the MSD to SD adapter idea and it was true. I found a MicroSD to xD adapter and I'm trying it through my camera (which may bottleneck speeds but we shall see).

**
Camera idea got 500kb/s so I'm gonna guess that it's a USB 1.0 cable or something, but it was really slow. So that's not a good test.

I'm gonna try returning the card and getting a Sandisk one and seeing if I get better speeds. If not, then I guess it's just my phone or something, but maybe then at least the adapter will work so I can plug it in through USB and get it to go faster (not to mention it's $5 cheaper).

I'll report back with anything I figure out that helps speeds so anyone who's having the same issues will hopefully figure something good out.
