Clear cache and clear data

Hi guys,
Like most, if not all of you, I suffer from internal memory deficiency syndrome. All my apps and stuff are on a sd card(32gb).I read a couple of similar threads but I have no idea what they are saying.Could someone please tell me the difference between clearing data and clearing cache?

Also, any tips on increasing my internal storage memory?

Please please please dumb it down for me so I can actually understand it :)

Thanks a million guys.

b.t.w. I am using a HTC Salsa. It's a rather amazing phone, but that could be just me :)

Clear Cache deletes the cached files the app has stored on your phone. This is useful for freeing up some storage space. Cache files are temporary files that are used to speed up your phone. For example, the Browser will store copies of webpages you visit, and only download them again if they've changed. If they've not changed then it will load the copy that is stored in the cache. Loading from flash memory is much faster than downloading them again. Similarly, the Market app will cache the icons for all apps you scroll past, as loading them back off the phone's internal storage is faster than downloading them again over the internet. So, it's always safe to clear a cache, you free up some space at the expense of the app being a little slower next time you use it. The cache will slowly refill of course.

Clear Data is used to clear all the data the app has stored. These include things like settings, usernames, passwords, high scores, etc. It effectively restores the app back to the state it was in when you first installed it.

You only have a few choices:

1. Move apps to SD. Realize though that an app on SD still uses some internal storage.
2. Remove some apps.
3. Clear cache and/or data. Clearing cache isn't an effective approach as it will just build up again. Clearing data may not be desirable (see above).
4. Clean up your data (delete stuff in apps that you don't actually need).

There are apps that will show you what's using up your internal storage. They may help you to uncover what's eating up the majority of your space so you can address those items first.
