Clear case

MetroPOS

Android Enthusiast
I saw a youtube video today of an Indulge that someone put into a clear case...and couldn't help but notice how much nicer it makes the phone's exterior look. I've got a cheap flat black case on mine right now which doesn't do much for the phone other than protect it, but now I'm probably going to buy a clear one cause it really does give off that "high quality" impression that the phone by itself is completely lacking.

I don't recommend this case at all. It is so hard to pry off, everytime I swapped my battery I had visions of breaking my phone.

Yeah that is the downside. Taking off the rear part of these cases is an extreme pain in the ass. I'm probably going to end up using the rear case of the black one I have, and use the clear for the front.

wagonis that case with the kickstand looks sweet. Wish I had seen one like that before I bought these. Oh well

At the risk of having a conversation w/ myself (inside joke), I thought I'd point out that I took a piece of sandpaper to two of the catches on the top end and it made this cover easier to remove.
I'm now using it regularly, it's a nice look albiet a bit bulky.

This is the one I got, works great.

to wagonis or anyone who knows about this specific case,

Is that a hard plastic case? I would imagine that the kickstand is, but it kind of looks like silicone in the picture.

to all,

Also, how can I protect my phone from dirt, etc. getting in between the protective case and the outside of the phone and scratching it? I'm a contractor, and I will be as careful as I can with this phone (probably leave it in the truck most of the time) but at some point I am going to need to use it on the job site. Can I get some kind of stick on film that works like a screen protector, except for the back and/or sides of the phone? Or maybe I will fill up the space with rubber cement, or silicone or something. Jeezus, what a mess that might be though... I would hate to mess up a $400 phone...

I am actually just waiting to order some protection, so I can get it in hand before I go back in to the store and buy the phone...

You can't. Since the cases all have little openings around them so that the buttons can be accessed, those areas are left exposed and dirt/dust can definitely find its way in there. Nothing really you can do about it except take the case off once a week or so and blow it and the phone out. The main purpose of cases is to absorb the impact/scratches when the phone gets dropped. It's not really designed to keep the phone clean. If that is what you are concerned about, then you probably buy a leather pouch in addition to a case so you can tuck phone away when you're onsite

This is one of the reasons why I prefer soft rubber like cases instead.unfortunately though, with it's slide out keyboard,i have yet to find one for our indulge! :(

I do realize that due to the nature of a slide out keyboard, the keyboard surface and the surface opposite of the keyboard (when closed) will not be able to be covered by anything. I guess I was referring to covering the outside back of the phone, and of course the screen itself also.

I think I will apply something like a ZAGG skin / InvisibleSHIELD, which is like a screen protector except it also covers the back surface of the phone I am referring to, as well as the screen. Does anyone have any experience with that type of protection? I have done some Googling, and some people really complain about those things, but then again they might not be applying it correctly (apparently they are a pain to apply).

I think I will try something like that, and then go over the top of that with the regular snap on two part type case. I suppose that's about the best protection one can expect for a slide out keyboard type phone like the Indulge. Something like this probably:

BLACK Rubber Hard Case Cover For Samsung Galaxy Indulge - FCR-SAR910BK - It's only $5.77 including shipping, and it looks to my eye pretty much like any other two part snap on case that I have seen. And the seller rating is 4.38 out of 5 stars, with a 45 day return policy. I don't see how I can go wrong there, but if anyone has a case they have been really happy with, please let me know! That case is also plain black, which I prefer (I don't care for the blue to black color change on the Metro case). But if you like color, they have some other (solid) colors as well.

It's just that I'm coming from an OtterBox Defender series on my BlackBerry 8330, and man, that case is just awesome! It has 3 parts: a stick on film (dry application) that covers the entire phone (front and back, one piece, that part even has felts that cover the speaker holes), followed by two halves of hard plastic that snap together, followed by a silicone piece that wraps around that and holds everything together and provides additional shock protection. And man, what a well made case. Everything is totally covered (well, except the track ball, of course). Even the first layer plastic film is molded for all the individual buttons on the keyboard, so you have good feel of the little bump keys.

I know that I will never achieve quite that level of protection on a phone with a slide out keyboard (OtterBox themselves state in their FAQ that they will never make a Defender series case for a slide out keyboard type phone, due to limitations of the form factor), but I suppose I was looking for "the best possible" protection. Therefore any other input would be appreciated.

Yup, it's a hard plastic case with a rubber coating.

I love this case!! :)

Q: Is the rubber coating coming off in places for you too, wagonis? I see it rubbing off on the parts that touch the inside of my pocket, expecially around the corners. No biggie, in my opinion. Just curious.

So I have been looking into these clear cling on type protective films, the kind you apply with some soapy water solution (then they cure overnight and are supposed to form a semi-permanent, clear coating for scratch protection). And this is what I have found so far...

There seem to be 3 main players, ZAGG/InvisibleSHIELD, BodyGuardz, and BestSkinsEver.

Apparently ZAGG were the original ones, they are supposed to be made out of the same stuff used to cover helicopter rotors during shipment or something. They are also the most expensive, $24.95 for one. And I have read mixed reviews, some people rave about them and say they are worth the money, others say they are not. The ZAGG skins come with some soap solution and a little squeegee. I couldn't see their shipping, but I get the impression it's a few dollars, although free shipping if you order more than $28 worth of stuff. They have a lifetime warranty, although you have to pay a few dollars shipping for them to send you the replacement, and then mail back your old case (in an envelope, cost = postage stamp). They also offer a customizable option, you can upload a picture and have that printed on your skin.

Then there is BodyGuards, they are $24.95 for two. They seem to be alright according to the few reviews I have read. I'm not sure if they come with solution or not. Their shipping is cheaper too, $2 for one skin or $1 for two.

Finally there is BestSkinsEver. This company was apparently formed in reaction to ZAGG. They say they use the same material. They believe in keeping prices low, in fact their skins are only $6.99 each! On their website they say that they don't believe in marketing BS, just keeping prices low, etc... In fact, they apparently mail their skins in a plain brown envelope! lol I don't remember how much shipping was, but I think it was pretty reasonable, possibly free if you order a couple skins. I think they have a lifetime warranty too. I have read a lot of reviews of people who were very happy with the product, and even more who said that service was excellent (called or emailed with a problem, and they mailed them another one no charge, etc.).

So after conducting all this research, I think I would like to go with BestSkinsEver. Only problem is, that they aren't making one for our Indulge just yet. :( I have emailed them my request, we will see what happens (in fact, if you are also interested in getting one for your Indulge, please send them a message here: contact BestSkinsEver). In fact, it turns out that BodyGuardz isn't making one yet either. :( Yes, that's right, the only people making a film for the Indulge right now are ZAGG:

ZAGG Samsung Galaxy Indulge Skin

Although in order to find it on their site, I had to pull up the "Forte SCH-R915." Although when you look at the page, it is correctly titled "Samsung Galaxy Indulge Skin" and it does look like the correct one (maybe those of you who have the phone in hand can take a closer look at the photo and tell me if you see anything out of place as far as how the cutouts, etc. look?).

So I suppose at this time I am going to go ahead and order the ZAGG skin, as it's the only option. Maybe later if it peels off, I will try BestSkinsEver, or just get a warranty ZAGG as a replacement. I will be getting the "full body maximum coverage" skin, that's supposed to cover the screen, the back, the sides, and anything else they can think of. As always, I shall report back my findings (if anyone is interested... if not, this sure has been a whole lot of typing for nothing, lol). I will then install the cheap plastic case (noted above) over the top of the ZAGG skin. We shall see how it goes...

Update: There is another company that is also currently making a skin for the Indulge, called Ghost Armor. After a little more last minute research, it sounds like they are more smooth, clear, have a better feel, and have less "orange peel" issues than the ZAGG shields (according to reviews I have read).

They are the same price ($24.99) for full body protection, although with a couple promo codes I found online, I was able to get it down to $19.99 plus about $5 shipping. I just pulled the trigger and ordered, I will report back when the stuff arrives and I apply it to my new phone.

Oh, and for those interested, I found the promo codes here: Ghost Armor Coupon Codes.

Yeah it's rubbing off in a few spots but nothing major.

Hi

Any update on the Ghost Armor ?

Thanks

I wanted to chime in and say that the hard plastic snap on cases cannot survive many removals. The little teeth that hold it on will eventually break off.

If you are a battery swapper then external hard cases are not for you.

I am almost embarrassed to admit that I received the Ghost Armor just as expected a few days after ordering, but never applied it!

I have just been extremely busy with work, we moved our business recently. That's why I haven't been around the forums nor IRC chat lately.

I will try to find the Armor and apply it some time in the next week or two and report back.

I got my clear case about 2 days. I ordered it after noticing how nice the phone looked after taking the Metro-provided case off in order to check numbers around the battery. It's been on for 2 days and it's all scratched. The screen protector from Metro....scratched. Now I know that's the purpose for these things but c'mon. I need to become rich and powerful so I can contract NASA to build me a phone. All these lifeless batteries and scratchable surfaces are annoying.

So, I'm feeling a bit necrophiliac...
BlueMuscles and others: how's the Ghost Armor skin treatin' ya?
I was thinking of getting one of them and remembered that it was already discussed here, so I'm looking for some feedback before taking the plunge!
