Close tabs in Chrome

I'm running a Droid4 with ICS and use Chrome as my browser. I generally keep the tab count low, but sometimes I can get 5 or 6 loaded at a time. I've noticed that some sites (or combination of sites) will be to much for my phone and everything slows way down.

This is when the real problem starts. If I close the tab(s) of the site that was too demanding, I can recover. BUT, in order to close the tab, I have to display all tabs and close the one I want. However, content is displayed when viewing all tabs, so that's more likely to break things further than it is to fix the situation. If I reboot, the tabs are still loaded so that somewhat helps if I can close the tabs before they load.

Is there a way to close a tab while looking at the page? Is there a utility that will close the tabs when Chrome is not loaded? Is there another way that I haven't thought of?

I think if you press the Android back button (not the Chrome browser back arrow) it closes the currently displayed tab.

The back button will go back one page. If there are no other pages in the history it will close the page. If the browser has 5 or 6 pages, pressing back may close one but won't allow you to close others easily and it will try to load the page that was last viewed in that tab (hence back) so that might cause an issue as well.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I *think* you can use the "Accessibility Tab Switcher" to make the tabs load in text-only rows rather than the cards with pretty (but slow) screenshots:

from gwhacks.net :
Here are two screenshots of the two versions of the Chrome for Android tab page.

To enable the experiment, do the following:

  1. Type chrome://flags into the browser's address bar and load the page.
  2. Tap on the menu button and select Find in Page.
  3. Type Tab Switcher which should take you straight to the Enable Accessibility Tab Switcher experiment there.
  4. Select Enable and then restart to restart the web browser.
When you now tap on the tab icon in the browser, you will see the new tab overview page displaying only page titles and urls but no screenshots.

That does not mean that you can't make use the the card tab layout as well. Just swipe down from your address bar and you should be taken right to that interface.

Hope that helps. :)
