Closing apps

Hi all,

New Android user here, came from the dark side.. how do you go about closing apps down? I've looked in both the settings > running apps and via a 3rd party app called 'Advanced Task Manager Pro' and I'm unable to close down GTA III on my Nexus 7. The app is sitting in the top left with the little icon and when you scroll down for the notification window it says it's still running and clicking will return to the game.

Hitting the back button shuts down the app, and hitting the home button multitasks allowing you to select a new app while the other is still running. Holding Home down for a while will give you a Recent list of previous apps that may or may not still be running. Task Manager app ( or listed on Recent List) will show you what app is still running.

I've used my son's iPod touch with OS6 and I keep asking him how to you get out of apps it must suck the iPod/iPhone battery down so fast having everything running in the background?

On iOS if you double tap the home button it will come up with a menu at the bottom of the running apps, hold your finger on one and you can remove them from there. Apparently iOS has some great way to manage memory which reduces the battery consumption of backgrounded apps, though I find that hard to believe.

Thanks for the info guys.

Did you use the back key to get out of it?

Probably not if it's still running, I have a habit of pressing the home button on iOS so I'm guessing I probably did the same on Android.

I would go into the app and ensure that you properly exit it by repeatedly pressing the back button (I believe it's a software key on the GS3) and if you still see the icon in the notification bar, ensure that it's not just that: a notification (maybe try clearing it and see what happens?).

Once you get to understand Android more you will learn that Android OS manages memory very well. The key is to learn to use the back button instead of the home button unless you are multitasking.

The same (including the skepticism part) is said of Android:

Anyway, I'm pretty sure some apps don't stop running just from using the Back key to get out of them. AFAIK the only way to be sure it's not running, without using a task killer, is to use the Menu button while in the app and choose "Exit", but that only works for apps that include "Exit".

If you are running ice cream sandwich press and hold the home button. That will bring up the list of "running" applications (they could just sitting in ram not using any battery). Swipe them off to the side to kill them. Install your task killer.

PS tapping on an app in that menu brings you to that app.

I have relevant experience in that game. Unless you shut down the app while inside the app (back button from playing>swipe over to exit) it will leave the stupid notification present and is a pain to get rid of (you can't swipe it away since it's ongoing)
