Help Closing Tabs / Not Sites

Smiliesrock

Lurker
Can someone please help? I'm a recent iPhone 5 transplant and have discovered when I close my apps (close all button) that it also closes my different tabs within chrome. I have figured out how to have the tabs within the chrome tab not be segregated and act like apps separately. However, I'd like to keep the tabs open within chrome while closing chrome. Is this possible? With Safari on the iPhone I was able to close the app and reopen when I was ready to read one or two different websites that were open. Can anyone help with this? Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum :)

Why close the app at all? If you are not using it it will just hibernate in RAM, using no power, until you open it again. If the phone needs the RAM for something else it will close the app. Otherwise it uses less power to wake the app from hibernation than to reload it from scratch, so closing the app just wastes power.

Similarly there is no merit in keeping a lot of RAM free (free RAM isn't doing anything for you, and the phone can free space up if it needs it). Just let the phone's OS manage that itself. So the bottom line is that unless an app is misbehaving, or you have a reason for wanting it closed (e.g. don't want someone else to see you were using it) you are better off not closing it at all.

Of course the app could still be closed. If there is an option to save tabs on closing and re-open them when you next start it will be in the app's settings. Some browsers have this, but as I don't use Chrome I can't tell you whether that particular browser does.

Thanks for the info - I don't have a reason for closing them other than I try to keep the apps closed because I assume there is a reason for the "close all" button. Maybe it makes the phone work better/faster/easier? I didn't find any setting within the chrome settings. It seems that my phone is already runner slower than the first day I got it (which was on Sunday, 3 days ago). Hopefully I haven't messed something up....

The reason could just be "because we always had one" ;). Seriously, I've not used that button since 2010. I'm actually slightly surprised that the S6 Edge has it, because many implementations of Android 5 no longer have the "close all" button.

"Close All" is Samsung's modification to the Recent Apps button. There's also a shortcut to Task Manager that doesn't exist on Google Android.

Unfortunately I'm with Verizon so I don't have the task manager that some other threads are referring to. I can see it in the list of apps that are on the phone but no icon exists. It appears my phone is running slow already. I'm pretty disappointed with the OS so far. It was great for the first day or two. I must have clicked something that I shouldn't have by accident.

Im an iOS convert too and you will never get the fluidity of iOS in an Android device. Apple make their hardware and software, Android make their software to go on a variety of manufacturers phones, just like Windoze. Im enjoying my S6 a lot..... more so than older android devices I have owned, but it still stutters and coughs every now and then which is just something I expect from Android. Its a RAM hungry pig of an OS haha.

Spec junkies are always quick to point out that the latest Android device has an octa-core and 2 million gig of RAM...... umm yeah and they still cough and splutter at times though. Im afraid Android is still a long way off the smoothness of iOS. Not wanting to start an OS war here. I know the benefits of Android over iOS too, just stating that the fluidity and smoothness is something that is not comparable

I don't have any problems with fluidity, and there are a couple of iOS devices in my house so I do have a comparison. But remember that each manufacturer customises Android for its own devices, and will have different priorities when doing that.

@Smiliesrock, it's hard to diagnose without more information. Best might be to ask in our S6 forum, and see what tips other S6 owners have.

Back to the original question---if I am correct in understanding what you are asking, if you go into settings under the Chrome app, there is an option that says "Merge tabs and apps". With that set to off, if I close all apps, the tabs in Chrome remain open.
