I have seen this topic in many different forums for many phones and I have had this error myself for a while...
Here is how I fixed it.
1. Back up contacts on phone by exporting to SD
2. Back up contacts on Gmail by exporting CSV.
3. Turn off Data and sync for gmail account.
4. DELETE all contacts on phone and gmail. (for phone I downloaded Contact Remover from market)
4. reboot phone
5. Turn on data
6. Go to accounts and open gmail account. sync contacts manually. I received an error saying too many deletes.
7. I selected undo deletes. (if there is a corupt contact file this will show it)
8. Go to contacts. I had a contact named (Unknown) with no info. I gave this contact a name "Delete Me" and # 555-1212 and saved contact.
9. go back to Accounts and re-syn contacts... No errors...
10. delete all contacts from phone again
11. Go to gmail and delete any contacts that sync'd - Import Contacts on Gmail from backed up file
12. Re-sync phone and all contacts restored with no errors.
hope this helps
