Apps Communicate with other stuff?

Hey all, I'm trying to find out how to make an app which acts like a switch, the case is I don't know were to start. I don't even know what's the name for that, I know there's bluetooth but its not exactly what I'm looking for. I checked the android developer site and searched and found some comunication stuff but I didn't know were to look.

What I'm asking for is what should I learn? Just tell me what it's called and ill google it.

A switch? As in a networking switch? What protocol will this "switch" operate on? TCP? Bluetooth? What?

I mean as a switch that communicates with a circuit, or something like that. (Example) The circuit as 10 switches, and the signal sent to it must match the combination of the switches. (Switch 1 up, second up, third down etc..)

I'm not looking for the above example, trying to find out what makes that kind of communications work for android. Don't know if I'm asking correctly, but I'm trying to state it as much better as I can.

Have you seen the Accessory Development Kit? It's hardware that talks to Android through USB and has all sort of I/O stuff you can drive directly.
