Comparing SSD's

Even games without Steam cloud? Nice!

There's just 2 things left:

1. Do I have to redownload all the games, will restoring a backup be ok?

2. Any idea how to get teh save game data from Ac2 - not from steam, but on uplay?

Everything in your library should show right back up. I install only the games I am actively playing at the time. You can back up your game data if you want, not in front of the computer right now so I can't tell you which folder.

Not sure about uplay games.

Yeah, cheers!

Managed to find a folder with save games inside :-P

Looks like it's just the un installing of everything to go!

Edit: seeing as I'm gonna format the drive, would just a quick uninstall of the programs do? ( otherwise, I normally do a deep clean with Revo)

(just something I noticed - the seagate 2tb drive runs quicker, quieter and cooler than the wd 1TB, which is good, just a shame that I was wrongly told to get the WD :( )

Problem : just booted up the PC and steam isn't there. It won't run, and if i open the folder, a lot of the files are gone. I've tried a system restore to earlier today but it was no good. However, I've still uninstalled most of the programs and games, and I'm now ready to do the format.

Edit: formatting now..very slowly... Any way to remove the system partition on that drive?

Alrighty. Seems like a made a little boo boo.

I forgot to move the folders like My Documents and Downloads back to the SSD. Would that actually be a problem?

But I've already formatted the HDD. Also, I see a few folders and files that are there, but I cannot access.

Am I being OTT when I'm considering wiping the SSD too and starting again from fresh?

EDIT: I went for it, and started gain. Completely from fresh. This time round, I've managed to find a few more drivers and tools, and also updated the firmware on my SSD :D

Also found this tool http://www.ssdready.com/downloads/ which looks at your SSD writes and estimated its life. At the moment it's predicting 13 years, but I'll report back tonight/after a few days

I'm a little late, but yes I would suggest a wipe and reload, a fresh start never hurts.

I'm going to have to check out SSD Ready! On edit: Does not list 8 yet!!!

" that. When I was doing IT work for a living, doing a "bare metal reinstall" was SOP for dealing with Windows gremlins.

Spending countless hours combing through systems, doing things piece by piece was great when I was learning how computers and Windows worked, with the goal to further my IT career. But if you just need it to get up and running properly, starting from scratch is the way to go.

Right. Problem. (Not really sure where to post this)

I was restoring a backup of my GTA data, and it didn't work. Apparently, cos it uses Games for Windows, I also need a backup of a different folder, which I don't have.

However, I did a system backup of the Windows on the HDD before it was formatted. Any chance the data is in there? ( I think I need a folder in the AppData, so would Windows have backed that up?)

And how should I go about getting the data from the backup? I guess I need to restore it onto one of the hard drives, but I dont know much about partitioning etc.

It's possible, but if you can live with starting over I would leave the backup as insurance, unless by backup you mean copied to another drive because you likely won't be able to access the folder without restoring the backup. Any gremlins you may have had before could come back if you do the restore.

Im not that far through, but it took me 14 hours, which is a lot for me :P

Could I make a partition on my HDD, and restore that backup (Windows system image) onto the partition, make a copy of the files I need and then delete that partition?

Unless that could still cause said gremlins?

edit: Could I actually restore those backups I made, seeing as they were from Windows off a different hard drive? (Really don't wanna replay through 15 hours of GTA)

edit edit: I can actually see what's in that backup. ANd it's bad news, looking through the Appdata folders of both backups, I can't see the Xlive folder I need :(

edit 3 : This is just an idea: The save game data is saved into folders with different names...assuming the folder names are linked to Windows Games, and they're the reason why GTA won't recognise them...

Could I just copy+paste the actual data and replace the data from a save game that actually works?

:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

IT WORKED!!! Now there's only one more GFWL - Batman AC, but that uses Steam Cloud so shouldnt be a worry. Then there's the hope that gamesavemanager actually backed up the rest of the games :P

edit: question:

Anyone using SRT caching?

In addition to the SRT question, I've found that my PC seems to be a little bit slower on this Windows? Start up used to be 10 seconds after POST, and now it's almost 30 ...?

(could thsi be to do with me having an extra hard drive connected at the moment?)

edit: Another SSD question: Using Samsung's Magician software, I can "optimise" settings for performance or reliability or capacity. What I had already done with an SSD optimising guide seems to be the best of all three worlds :P

However, I have an option to set over provisioning - looks like it takes up 23GBs, for "maintaining SSD performance/lifespan". Any idea what this actually is and if I should set it?

One mo thing :P, how big should my page file be? The "reliablilty" pre set wants to up the "virtual memory" from 100MB to 1GB., but mine is 8GB at the moment...

Wait...slower on 8?!?! Do you have all your BIOS settings correct? Mine is considerably faster.

I'm not using caching.

No, still Windows 7. The only difference this time round is I installed it off a usb drive, and moved my user folders to the hdd, and made a system backup

edit: looking at samsung magician, it wants me to enable write-cache buffer flushing and write cache buffer ... is this worth doing? Is it right to do ?

edit2: I remembered that whilst installing this new Windows, I decided to swap the hard drives round so that the SSD was in slot one. Changed this now, and performance is back where it was!

A quick Magician bench:

seq reads : 545 (up to was 540)
" writes : 257 (up to was 250)

IOPS (still dont know what this is ) : read : 68K (up to was 96K)
writes : 61K ( up to was 62K)

So it looks good now :P A quick scan in Avast shows a read rate of 150+MBs, whereas before it was max 110...

Any reason why swapping the hard drives on the motherboard would have such a difference? And why my IOPS seems to be a bit low for reads?

You're going to laugh to yourself when you read this.

You know how we are.

Once we get the taste of that SSD performance, anything that would benefit from the speed of the SSD, is going on that SSD. Until it's full that is...

Which is why I opted for a SATA lll Raptor for programs and I haven't regretted it.

I didn't know where to post this but:

Would I gain any performance moving GTA IV to my SSD? Obviously there will be no change to the FPS, but would textures in-game load up any quicker? (TBH I haven't tried playing my with HDD and the SDD connected in the right sockets )

Anyone?

ALso, another quick question: Using Samsung Magician, I can see the SMART details of my SSD which says it's written 0.5TB of writes. Would this be since Windows/the application was installed, or since the SSD was first used?

You would see some performance gain running it from the SSD, I don't do it because SSD's don't like a lot of write cycles and it will shorten the life of the drive. Once/if they come down closer in price to HDD's I will start using them for all programs. Of course the Raptor I bought for my programs wasn't exactly cheap...:D

I would imagine the figure would be from day one, or at least since the Magician program was installed.

I know, that's why I'm always in two minds where to save my programs... So far I just have Chrome, Avast, and Assassins Creed on the SSD.

According to the SMART data, I've done 0.5TB of writes. Google tells me this is 4Tb, and SSDready tells me that 4Tb over 60 days (from when I think I got the ssd) means a Crucial 250GB m4 would last 4 years.

Reckon that sounds right for a Sammy one too?

I have a Kingston HyperX 3K 120GB SSD in my Chromebook, lightning fast (blazing quick OS helps even more ;) and so far so good. Battery gained about 1.5 to 2hrs as well.
