Friend at work has a old Samsung Galaxy that came with android 2.2 and updated to 2.3. He has the android market and can't switch to the play store. He already tried clearing the cache and data. Can he download the play store apk file and get it that way, or will it mess up his phone?

I'm surprised the Android Market app didn't update itself. Side loading the Play Store .apk shouldn't hurt anything. I found the file at android police. You can verify that MD5 using ES File Explorer. If your friend is comfortable rooting/flashing the phone, he should consider putting a custom ROM with a newer version of android on it.
Android 2.2 and higher is compatible with Google Play.

If he's cautious about downloading the play store apk file he could contact his carrier about it - I seem to remember some people having to do that when Google Play was first released.

i would rather have Android Market myself. Google Play Store is utter crap and incorrectly flags many devices as incompatible with certain apps/games. i cannot as a result, play Real Racing 2 on my Nexus 10 (Google Play deems it incompatible)

Real Racing 2 is one those ones that's "incompatible" with my Chinese phone in the China Play store, but is compatible in the US Play store.

AMEN to that Nick!!! If I got a dollar for every time stupid Google Play told me that something wasn't compatible with my device and I had to go out and find it myself and "manually" transfer it via the PC I'd be rich right now!!!!! Talk about annoying!!!!

It is for that and a few other reasons i deleted Play Store off my stuff and use Amazon App Store instead.
