Root Complete Newbie

So after having an Iphone for the past 2 years I've decided to make the switch to an android. I now have the DroidX. My Iphone was Jailbroken and I had a complete know-how of working a jailbroken device and all the goodies that came along with it. Now that I have an android I feel like I was just shot back to elementary school. I have absolutely 0% knowledge of android lingo (besides "rooting") or how to even get about "rooting". So my question is, what are the benefits to rooting my DroidX (2.3.3), what are some of the best features after rooting, If you can get free apps after rooting, and finally, the best way to root my droid. Thank you in advance :D

Ok lets go in order here.

Here for some Lingo.

Here to Root.

Rooting your phone allows you to install custom roms and have more controll over your phone. Not as much as other since the bootloader is locked on the X.

Free apps you can get by searching but we will leave it at that. No you dont have to be rooted either to get those.

I am sure Steven or Trophy or other great guides and fellow fourm members will tap in to help explain more too but use what i gave you to get started and read and if you dont know ASK!
 
Android Forums is probably the best place for newbies and the DroidX forum has some of the best support for anything rooted or returning to stock. :D
