Root complete, step by step guide?

hi,
have been looking around here, and may possibly have missed it,
but...
is there, or does anyone know of, a complete guide to rooting

from first step 'have you got your phone?'
through to last step 'you're done'

there is a lot of info on here, but it doesn't seem very straightforward.
i'm not a tech novice, but not an expert either, especially when it comes to this.
have never rooted a phone before, and don't want to ruin it

That post has a tool which does everything for you (read the first link in the post). Would that suffice?
