Help Completely Stuck - Video and Photo

Lurker
Hi,

I know there've been other threads but I can't find them.

I've got a new xoom and love it. I want to put a few films on there that i can watch offline (ie not streamed, on the plane etc). I am not overly technical, and i tried to put some video on there last night via usb datacable but i couldnt see it.

I have a few questions:
1 - what are acceptable formats? I have a converter, just need to know which formats to use.

2 - which folder do I drop them into?

3 - what's the best app? I've got 'Summer Player' or something like that, but I dont know if that's the best one - does it just pick up any films i drop in in the right format?

4 - where do i find them through the xoom? When i'd dropped some in yesterday, i went to Camera but there was nothing there, and i couldnt see any other menu item that might be videos?

Also, re' photos. I'm fine with dropping them in there - i've put them in the 'DCIM > Camera' bit, but they just go into the one folder on the Xoom. How do i create new folders on teh xoom? I tried creating them through explorer on my pc but they didnt appear ont he xoom...

Thanks!

hi,

ill help you find answers.

1. here is an excellent thread at the support forum of motorola on codec and video conversion. https://supportforums.motorola.com/message/345391#345391 your question as to what codecs are preferred are listed there for the android OS.

2. there is a "movies" folder in your memory on the xoom. you should install ES file explorer and this will allow you to "explore" the memory in the xoom and locate the movies folder. if you have the xoom connected to the computer, you can drop the movie files there via USB OR you can use wifi explorer and send them wirelessly. i do the latter.

3. best app for what? to play movies? the built in player will play them just fine. a great 3rd party player is moboplayer--highly recommended as a 3rd party replacement should you want to go 3rd party.

4. where do you find what? photos you take? its in the gallery section. or do you mean movies you take with the built in camcorder? again same place.. the gallery section.

use ES file explorer to add folders and copy and paste files.

is this your first foray into android? just want to see how basic i need to be here. i dont want to insult your intelligence.

if you need any more questions ask.

Hi there! Thanks so much for your help.

Yes, this is my first android experience. I am familiar with apple, but expected to perhaps find a 'movies' folder on the xoom perhaps within the 'gallery', but all this seems to display is photos, and only 2 folders for those - Camera and Downloaded... will the movies appear in here when they're in the right format?

Re' the photos - all photos i create just go into the one folder - Camera. What if i want to organise them into different folders - how do i create new folders?

Thanks so much for your help.

yes apple is a much slimmed down and easy interface--thats by design.

the android is a more powerful UI and you can do many things. its a slight learning curve to master as you have so much control to do a lot of customizations.

that said, there is a movies folder in the root of the card. as said, go to the market and download ES file explorer. this will allow you to see the other folders. there are more folders such as notifications, that you can install ringtones for certain things on your tablet.

so get that app, its free, and you will see the other folders.

you can also hook up your tab to usb and you will see these folders also. using wifi explorer will allow you to see it wirelessly without a usb cable.

once you get a converted film, you can copy paste it to the movies folder.. OR you can create a folder for each movie if you want to... you have a few options here.
