Compose new message isn't showing correct contacts?

Just activated a Transform Ultra for my wife, and she's noticed a peculiar bug. On my phone (LG Marquee) and most Gingerbread devices I've ever used, you can hit Compose New Message from the SMS app and start typing your recipient's name in the TO field. It is supposed to pull your contacts in and offer options as you type until you pick one.

On hers, however, it seems to be showing email addresses instead of mobile phone numbers for the contacts. Not only that, but much of her address book doesn't show up as an option, even if she implicitly types out their entire name.

I tried it over and over a few times, rebooted, its the strangest thing. Meanwhile, I showed her that she can go into contacts and pick someone to send a message to that way (click on the smiley face text icon next to the number). But it is silly that she can't just start a new message from the sms app like she should be able to! Has anyone heard of a bug like this before?

I recently switched over to the Messaging app (from the Play store - the one with the blue face - it's from KitKat) because it has a few improvements. I just checked it and it works the old way - type in a name and it starts showing matching contacts with phone numbers. But it will show all phone numbers, not just those entered as mobile. Maybe that's an "undocumented feature" now.
