comprehensive search function

i'm considering buying an android phone, perhaps the evo. i have 5000 contacts, so scrolling down, even within one letter that starts the contact, won't work well. i want to be able to find a contact on my phone by typing a word that's part of the name of that contact (could be first, last, or company) and having all matches show up.

i'd also like to be able to search my contacts so if a word is within the contact, it would show up in a search. for instance, perhaps Mike Smith is my electrician, and the word electrician is in the notes part of the contact. i can't remember mike smith's name, so i'd like to type in the work electrician and find him that way. is there an app that does this on any droid phone?

I believe the standard google search widget will do this.

Actually, I think the Google search only searches within the Name. You can augment the fields searched by downloading the free Contact Lookup and Contact View apps from the market. They work together like a charm.

The Quick search Box : Quick Search Box

allows you to search for contacts.

There's also gesture search which is cool.

However, performance with 5000 contacts could be important. If you try these and find them too slow, then there's always Contact Lookup Fast. This is one of the fastest FULL contact search applications there is. Here's a nice chart showing the relative performances.

Caveat, I'm the developer of Contact Lookup

The thing with the Google Quick Search for contact lookup is that it only appears to search within the contact name. The OP wants to search other fields in his contacts (which I think your Contact Lookup app will do, of course, as noted above).
