Help Computer won't recognize Galaxy s

From the Google search I guess I'm one of several million who have spent hours trying to sync my phone and computer. Apple might not be as robust as android but at least you can plug in and get to work in the very same day. I've been screwing around with Android for the better part of 18 months now and can't get any answers. I've called the help desk for samsung, att&t and Google/android and it's all the same:

Install Sam*sungs New PC Stu*dio for the dri*vers
Go to Set*tings – About phone – USB set*tings and choose Ask on connection.
Go to Set*tings – Appli*ca*tions – Devel*op*ment and turn on USB debugging.
Con*nect the phone via USB, choose Mass stor*age from the menu, slide the noti*fi*ca*tion drawer down and select “Select to copy files to/from your computer”.

My first samsung Galaxy S had a screen that went dead after 5 months and I lost every photo of the Summer and fall of 2010, both of my children's birth days, summer vacation and autumn photos and video. So let's just say I'm at my wits end with Samsung. It was so difficult and mind numbing to find any information on syncing my phone I gave up and just emailed the photos and videos to my self - so much for a "smart phone"

However my "new" phone which is really a rebuild turns on and off at random and I'm expecting sudden death any day. so I've found a new sense of urgency to try and get this pig connected however it seems unlikely - you are my last hope Android Forum - you are my last hope Android Forum
When I plug it in to the USB the computer says in a bubble in the bottom right that Android is plugged in but that's it. I have Kies installed and the other zip given to me by Samsung and android help. And Believe I've restarted both the phone and computer about a 1000 times - sometimes connected sometimes not.

Okay a couple of thoughts....

1. Do you have any apps that may be interfering? I remember reading with the evo root process a while back that apps like doubleteam (or whatever it's called) could interfere with the connection process.

2. If you ADB installed you could try to adb into the phone to see if that connects.

3. You could always see if a live linux disc will pick up the phone...

None of these are really 'solutions', but I do think they may help you narrow down the problem. Also, you may wanna check out the Galaxy S forum to see if they know what's up...

(also, what's with those asterisks? ;) )

sorry to hear of all the problems you've had! just trying to throw in my 2 cents here:

-have you gone into your Start menu and gone to Computer, to check the drives that are connected to the computer? your phone's sdcard should show up as something like 'Removable Disk', IF it is working properly.

-does the phone give you a second confirmation asking you if you want to enter storage mode? i've had an Android phone that did that, and i sometimes forgot about it.

sorry for the possibly obvious questions! hope you get it working.

edit: have you tried a different usb cable, and/or different usb ports?
