Confused about pushing mail

I have a gmail account I set up on my infuse, or maybe the salesperson did it, I don't know. But I didn't know there was a seperate app for just Gmail till I noticed I was getting two notifications in the menu bar every time I got mail. I had push set to 5 minutes and notify me in bar. I turned off notify me in bar in both programs, and left 5 min as the interval. So now I guess it's working right.

Except that I saw someone on here say you shouldn't have to set an interval for push, that the interval is actually a pull. Is that correct? Should I be getting notified of my mail, in the bar, instantly when there is a mail for me? Or do I actually have to set it to the battery wasting 5 minute interval to be notified as soon as possible?

How can I know that Gmail app is not doing anything any more? It is a terrible app compared to the android mail app and I want it to not do anything.

I also noticed that when I turned off notify my in bar, I no longer get any kind of sound alert. I don't even get a number on the icon now. I want both of those things.

The gmail app is true push gmail. The other mail app is for IMAP / POP3. It sounds like your gmail account is setup in both the gmail app and the mail app. You are right, push mail doesn't have an interval you set. You get notified as soon as your get an email.

In my case, I like getting notified as soon as I get a message and not having that process drain my battery, so I have my gmail account setup in the gmail app and don't have anything setup in the mail app.

So, if I were you, I would decide which you want more, push email or to use the stock mail app, remove your account from the other one. That should makes things simpler.

I would appreciate instant push on gmail without the battery drain, but the program is too crappy. The only option I see in the program is to archive messages. I archived a message as a test and now I have no idea where it went. There is no option to use sub folders. Am I missing something there?

When you archive a message, it is removed from your inbox but still exists in the All Mail label. On your phone, in the gmail app, go to menu --> labels and choose all mail. You should see the mail there.

You can think of labels like folders, but an email can have multiple labels (ie, be in multiple folders). When accessing your mail via a web browser on your computer, you can setup nested labels, to get the sub folder structure.

Well if there is no way to use the 15 or 20 subfolders I already have then I don't think I can use this program. It's unbelievable that gmail's own app doesn't work intuitively.

When you go to labels in the gmail app, do you see the nested labels you already have? I see them on mine.

Wait... no way to use subfolders? You're still in the wrong application then, because GMail supports labels beautifully. Open the GMail, not the EMail app.

Ok i have it now. If i want to save a message to a subfolder I have to go to the message then hit menu then change label then uncheck the label it's in then check the new label i want it to be in. Wow. In other programs you just hit the change folder button and select the one you want and it's done.

So if i want to stay with the gmail app, how do i disable the default mailer?

Ok i removed myself from the default mail and adjusted the settings for gmail. So i should now get mail instantly? i don't suppose theres some way to get rid of the default mail icon in the bar is there? and replace it with the gmail app?

You should be able to just drag the the GMail app from the app drawer (the thing that pops up when you press the center button in the launcher dock) onto it... I think: I've gone through so many launchers that I'm a bit fuzzy on what the default launcher does and doesn't do.

I got it now, you have to go to edit in the programs menu and change it to customizable grid, then you can drag a program to the task bar.
