Root Confused. Which Android 2.3 custom ROM would be best to use?

Hi,

I've bought my Xperia X8 about a year ago, and lately I've been thinking of installing a custom ROM. I've already read a number of articles on how to do this, and it looks easy enough to do (albeit the procedure might take a while).

However, I have no idea which ROM to install, and which one would suit me the best. I did some homework on the pros and cons of different custom ROMs, and I still have about seven of them on the shortlist. Naturally I could try all seven of them, but that would defeat the purpose of this thread (in which I try to narrow the list down :D ).

So, what I was thinking was to share what exactly it is I would like to achieve by installing a custom ROM, and if it is possible for someone to point out which custom ROM/ROMs, out of their personal experience, could fit into the given description. Since I'm sort of an average smartphone user, I'm sure that the thread could be of use to someone in the future with the same problems.

1. Firstly, I would like to keep all the basic functionality that the stock ROM has, meaning that 3G, wifi, bluetooth, GPS, texting, calls, syncing, camera quality, video reproduction, FM radio and the like should work as they used to, or at least close to the original quality.

2. Lack of multi-touch bugs me a lot. I've read that X8, in the hardware sense, cannot support multi-touch per se. However, if I interpreted the information correctly, a software fix to the problem is possible and that some ROMs do have that option. I'm a fast writer, and there's nothing more excruciating than having both letters while writing an SMS get cancelled out because I was too slow in lifting the first finger off the keyboard.

3. I would really prefer a faster UI, because at times the stock ROM can get quite sluggish. Either the more optimized ROM or the better use of the phone's hardware would be preferable.

4. Auto-rotation. Some colleagues demonstrated that their custom ROMs on different smartphones do not support auto-rotation. This shouldn't be the case here.

5. Moving apps from internal memory to SD card should be made possible.

And that's about it. I'm sorry if I took a good chunk of your time by making you go through all of these "demands", but they are kind of what, in my opinion, Xperia X8 misses in order to become a really solid mid-range smartphone, even flawless if you will in its own sense.

If you have experiences with any of the ROMs that could do all this, I would be really grateful for your suggestions :)

Cheers.

6 months later edit:

Still on FroyoPro. No bugs encountered, very fast and stable. If you want GB, go for GingerDX. Holo Launcher Plus and Smart Keyboard Pro are now my personal recommendations. Cheers.

Hi,

Here's just to answer my own question.

I've tried several 2.3 ROMs, and I recently realized I've been looking in a completely wrong place.

Each of the 2.3 ROMs had something I didn't quite like. Therefore, I took a shot at trying some of the 2.2 ROMs.

I found FroyoPro v2.5. It's just perfect. Everything works, dual-touch, auto-rotation, moving apps to SD card...

I also installed Xperia Active launcher and Gingerbread 2.3 keyboard you can find on the market, and the little feeble Xperia X8 I owned for just over a year became a monster. I love it, and probably won't be switching phones in a long while.

Good luck to everyone with rooting of their own devices and unlocking the beast that is Xperia X8 :)
