Help Confused

I realize this is a dumb questions but...

I keep hearing that one needs Android 2.2 in order to install apps to a SD card but I was under the impression that the 16 gig SD card is the only memory the Epic has. How does that work then?

It has 500MB of internal memory. You can see how much you are using by holding the home button and going into task manager. Under the Summary tab you will see "Program" that shows your memory usage.

So...all your apps have to fit on 500 mgs of internal memory? That just doesn't seem like very much. Does this mean the 16 gb card is basically just for MP3s and media files?

Now with 2.1 yes! This is why 2.2 or 2.3 is so important it will allow us to move some programs over to the SD and free up the internal memory space. Not all programs can be moved however. Some have to be in the internal memory by design.

*sigh*

I really want to get the Epic since it's only $100 on Amazon but this lack of Froyo is killing me. I was so stoked that it came with a 16gig card instead of an 8 gig like the Evo but what's the use if I can't put programs on there?

Exactly, But honestly I really think we should have 2.2 or .3 within a month. I really can't see it going longer than that. I have a sneaky feeling we are going to get Ginger bread now and, this is the reason for the delay, im hoping anyways. The Epic is a very nice handset IMO the very best of all the Samsung S series phones even the Nexus that offers no SD card slot at all.

Don't know what you're so worried about. I have over 100 apps now on the Epic's internal memory. And it wont be too much longer before 2.2 is released. So unless you have hundreds of apps that needed to downloaded immediately, I wouldn't worry about it.

Seriously? 500 megs isn't enough for your MOBILE apps?

We're not talking desktop apps here, folks. Even if every mobile app was a total HOG like Google Maps (which clocks in around 5 megs)... you could STILL load 100 apps on there.

The truth is, most mobile apps are nowhere near 5 megs. Most or only 1-2.

How many apps do you think you need on your phone? I can't think of 100+ apps that I could possibly NEED on my phone.

Yeah, it's a nice feature to install the apps to the memory card in 2.2+, but c'mon... it certainly isn't something that is a critical feature. The stuff you want on your memory card is your MEDIA, that's the stuff that is REALLY big, not the apps.

Thanks for the input guys. This is going to be my first smart phone so I don't how far 500 megs will stretch. I knew one of the reasons I was looking at the Epic over the Evo was it's bigger SD card right off the bat.

The whole thing is just frustrating because it seems pretty clear that the Epic has the better hardware but I'm really shifting back towards the Evo now because hardware doesn't matter if it's not properly supported. I know I should have done my research better but I couldn't help but assume that after four months (which is when all the head to heads were written) the Epic would have gotten the update which Samsung had said was coming soon. If I really believed the Epic was going to get 2.2 or 2.3 within the next few weeks, I'd happily plop down the cash but now I'm really concerned over how much Samsung plans to support this as a device. That may seem silly considering what a steal it is at $100 but I play to use this phone for the next two years and frankly don't want to feel abandoned its manufacturer. I guess I'll dwell on it untill 2morrow morning and then make a choice.

If it's that big of a deal to have froyo, just install the leak until the official OTA comes out. Then flash back to DI18 and get the OTA. I'm not a developer or anything and it was extremely simple. If you get AppBrain or another back up program, it's really easy to reinstall your apps. You are getting a new phone with nothing on it, I'd just flash DK28 instantly and then you don't even have to worry about erasing anything initially.

Also, most of us on Sprint will upgrade in 12 months...you might be getting a new phone in just one year. If you think about it that way, there's no reason not to try the Epic first. If you don't like it, you've got 30 days to make the switch to the Evo. I started with the Evo and switched to the Epic and I like my decision.

How exactly do I switch? I'm planning on getting the Epic through the amazon deal for $99. How would I got about switching if after 30 days, I didn't like it?

As for the leaked OS, I've heard mixed things about it and a lot of bug reports. I'd rather use the supported features and honestly support is a big part of why I'm nervous. It's not just Froyo but the feeling that Samsung isn't going to Support the Epic for very long. I normally don't go with what's popular (often the opposite) but the Evo being a bigger seller means that it's going to be supported longer not just by its parent company but by other copmanies (accessories and such). The fact that Samsung can't even get its act together to release a four month year old bios is just worrisome. It's frustrating because there's so much about this phone that I think is great.

Not sure how you would go about and switch if you go through Amazon. You could always sell it and then buy an Evo...might lose a little money on the deal though.

As long as this phone gets Froyo, that's all that should matter. I know everyone is hoping we'll get Gingerbread, but honestly, with the ability to upgrade in 1 year, it shouldn't matter too much. When I get another phone next August, it will have Gingerbread I'm sure. This phone runs very smooth on 2.1 and the 2.2.1 leak is running very smooth as well on my phone with all of the features this phone should have. I have ZERO problems with the leak. No force closes, no other problems that I'm aware of. I'm going to flash back to DI18 once the OTA is live and then get the official update to 2.2.1. I probably will look more into HTC and what they have available next time, but it's going to be hard to go away from a keyboard since this one is so nice (and the first keyboard I've ever had on a phone). This is the best phone I've had in a while and my last four phones include the iPhone 3GS, Droid X, Evo, and this Epic.

The programs might install in main memory, but often their data is on the sd. I can install to sd on my Evo, but I haven't found a need to and I have a ton of programs installed.

Samsung will provide support for it, they have way too much invested with all the different variations with so many different major carriers world wide plus not to mention a tablet sculpted after it. And has already been approved for 2.3 so this will not be a short run phone. I feel they pushed it out to the public before it was truely meant to come out and thats why it was released with 2.1 instead of 2.2 and may be the reason why they are having issues getting 2.2 ready for it, no fact with that just an opinion. I do not regret my decision for one second going with the epic over the evo.
