Root Confused

Hi guys, I have started to root my phone, using Revolutionary. I have got as far as backing up the phone on the Revolutinary CWM and am now wanting to install zip from SD card.

I have looked at numerous posts and have downloaded the PCM10IMG.zip file that I have seen crop up on a number of posts.

I have sent it to the SD card and can view this as a zip file at the bottom of the list, when I click on this is states that the download was abborted.

Now when i go into the phone the SD card comes up with a read-only note at the top left and wont allow me to view and delete the files?

Any help would be greatly received thanks in advance.

Steve

What is that zip? I tried googling the filename, but the only page I could find it referenced on is in Persian, and that one was for the Desire Z. Anyway "IMG" in the filename sounds wrong if this is supposed to be the root patch - this sounds more like system image intended to be flashed via hboot (but not on this handset!).

Why not use the file linked in the guide here?

Anyway, as for the card, try rebooting the phone, or mounting and unmounting the card. Did you try to click on it with a file explorer, or install it from recovery? Don't think it should have done anything either way though.

Hi Hadron

Do you have the link to the files sorry.

When i reboot the phone i select Recovery which takes me to the Revolutionary screen, i have completed a back up but need to install a zip file from the SD card, this is the problem I am having. Is the phone rooted yet or am i needing to do this last step to sort everything out.

In terms of the SD card I will try to save everything off it and format as i think this may be the problem????

Needless to say I am confused and maybe slightly out of my depth now????

This is where I am now in the Rooting process?

ROOTING PROCESS

7) Now for rooting:

a) Boot into Hboot (from off, hold vol-down and power) and choose "Recovery" from the menu.

Optional: you may choose to take a backup while in recovery, before the next step. This is insurance - although the risk is low, if anything does go wrong with the next bit you can restore the backup from recovery and the phone is working again. Making a recovery backup ("nandroid") before flashing anything is a good habit to get into.

b) Choose "flash zip from SD card" or similar from Recovery menu (use trackpad to navigate)
c) Choose the Root file you downloaded to your SD card from the Revolutionary website.
d) Wait till it says it's done, then choose to reboot.

Congratulations, you're S-OFF and Rooted!

It's the zip file from step 4b of the revolutionary guide here (link is to the newer version - someone recently bumped the older one).

The phone isn't rooted until you flash that zip from recovery. However, you do have a custom recovery, which is more important. Given that you can either flash that patch to root the current ROM, or just flash a custom ROM (which will be pre-rooted). Generally people root the current ROM first - even if you just want to flash a custom ROM it's useful to take a Titanium Backup before doing that, and Titanium requires root.

hi steve ,
custom roms is the easy/nice bit imo :) im currently on zm oxygen which is very nice and smooth - other go to roms are dGB (super small) and mildwild ox

...as you can tell - i dont like sense :D

enjoy

Great! :)

And yeah, that's the right way to do it - get your head round it before charging in. If you have any questions, just ask them here :)

I have successfully updated the Rom to Oxygen-2.3.2-Bravo which seems to work really well on the phone, nice and quick.

I have also downloaded Titanium Backup and have moved as much as I can from the phone memory to the SD Card which has definitely made the phone quicker and got rid of the Storage issues I was having before rooting.

What is your thoughts of the Rom i am running is there a better one or is this an OK one to run for the time being.

Also is there anything else you would say is worth running on the phone APP wise?

Cheers for the help and glad I persisted.
