it *should* work with wifi now, so even if you get your phone registered with a web pass, once that data connection is broken, you are back to the same non-working wifi connection. If it's not working now, registering your phone won't fix it.

I did as you said and the same login screen comes up saying to sign up/and sign in for a gmail account. I tried to sign in, but the error said: Cannot establish a reliable data connection to the server.

Try setting the clock on your phone. Android will use SSL to connect to connect to the marketplace and SSL needs a vaguely similar time on both the client and the server. Normally your network takes care of this, but as you don't have a SIM...
