Connecting to 3g

My phone never seems to be able to get 3g. At first i thought it was cos i live in cumbria and it has a poor coverage but when im at uni in newcastle i don't get it anywhere and then i went down south for the weekend i didn't get it there either.

I occasionally get a couple of seconds before it disappears. When we were going down south we were stuck in traffic (completely stopped at the time) at Birmingham which should have good coverage, i checked my phone and i had 3g for the first time since i got it back in febuary. so i thought i'd give it ago and within seconds of me unlocking my phone it switched back GPRS.

I'm on o2 which i believe has good coverage but i never seem to get it even when other o2 users seem to have it.

Is this a problem with the phone?

Hmm, first thing I'd try before anything else is put the sim in another phone.

If you don't get it, it could be a dodgy sim.

If you do, we will need to try work out what's up with your phone. Maybe a simple setting.
For example, your network selection on Automatic?
