Connecting to IOT Devices - No Internet

Hi -
I have a lot of IOT devices in my home (Ring, Nest, Cameras, etc) and I have recently had a hell of time connecting to a WiFi network that does not have an Internet connection.

My devices (Pixel, Samsung Note 9 and Samsung tablet) constantly disconnect from the SSID if the device does not detect a connection to the Internet. This is incredibly frustrating, as I am often connecting to an SSID that is being broadcast by an IOT device that is right out of the box. I have to connectect to the IOT devices' SSID first, to edit it's information, and in turn allow it to connect to a regular SSID like the one my wireless router is broadcasting.

ANyone else experiencing this? Seems to be a problem with Android 8, 9, and higher. I can't believe this is an "improvement' to Android OS, as it will prohibit everyone from configuring IOT devices.

i too have those devices in my home, even a wifi enabled washer/dryer system. I have film production gear that uses wifi to send wireless video and they need to connect to a smartphone.

never had any issue.

the concern is you need to tell the phone to stay connected even though it does not detect an internet connection. there should be a pop that occurs when you connect to these devices. you tell it to stay connected, and it will.

again i do this often.

What kind of router do you have? If your own, what brand and model? If it's an ISP-supplied modem/router, who is the ISP?

If you're have multiple devices having issues connecting to your WiFi it doesn't sound like this necessarily an Android issue but rather a problem with your home network.

Yup - I do this all the time too - my entire house is automated.

The pop up that you mentioned never comes up now. it used to - and it would ask "Do you want to stay connected?" I am not getting that now on any of my devices - Pixel, Note 9, Note 4, and Galaxy Tab

The network is Aruba HPE 802.11ac APs, with an HPE 48 port POE switch, connecting through a NetGear FV336 VPN router. All SSIDs are operating normally with a Spectrum 300 mb/s Internet connection.

Impressive set up underlying your home LAN, so odd that you're having such problems adding devices to it. But again, taking into consideration you mentioned problems involving a wide range of different devices from different manufacturers, I'd still think there's a basic networking issue involved, not an Android one. If all those devices are having connectivity problems, I'd focus on some kind of basic network problem, not all the devices.
Reset the Netgear router back to its factory defaults and reconfigure things from scratch.

Op,
Have you tried clearing the phones cache? How about the apps cache that your devices use?

There’s settings in dev options called WiFi verbose logging and allow WiFi roaming scans (this one may not matter here though). I have these checked. This wil show you extra details in the WiFi nets your scanning on your phone. This has always helped me to connect to these devices.

I don’t think the network matters, be it impressive or basic. I agree with the op—its more on the android side of things. Reason being is you have to connect to these devices first then to the network. I have zero issues and I’m using networks form library WiFi to JPL (Jet Propulsion Labs here in LA) and regardless the network, i still log on.

Maybe flushing the phones cache and the apps cache may kick this pop up to occur.
