will they ever fix it for android, thousands of students use android on campus.

I have no problem connecting to my schools wifi with my Droid2. It connects automatically, then asks me for my user name and password once I try to use the browser. Same as using my laptop on campus.

Your school's IT dept. are idiots. Go to Settings>Wireless & Networks>Wi-Fi Settings and select Add Wi-Fi Network (should be the last item in the list)

You'll need to know the AP's SSID or IP number and what protocol they use for Phase2 authentication. You'll also need your user credentials.

Mind you that will get you on the local network but if they use a proxy server to grant access to the internet, you'll need a proxy-aware browser like Opera mobile.
