Hi Guys, I need help on how to use Wi Fi etc. Right now I live on top of a hill and have great reception on my 3G iPhone. I want to dump my land line and DSL box and use an iPad or notebook since I have such great signal. Do I just use my ATT cell service and tether or ??? Any help appreciated. Oh, also looking at the Google Android 9 or 10" iPads. Very inexpensive on eBay but don't know the down side if there is one. Will get a high end notebook later but just need to make the jump away from DSL to get started..

Oh & I found a 10" on eBay, any good?

Search for "10.1" Google Android 4.03 Tablet PC 8GB 1GB DDR3 HDMI Bundle 10" Keyboard" thnx, M

Id be careful with using a phone or other device as a hotspot. most data plants (unlimited included) start lowering your speeds the more you use them. you might get one or two episodes of on-demand TV before they cut you down to what feels like dialup speeds. Also, using a 3G tablet or smartphone as a main device can get quite expensive if they're locked into one data plan (often the most expensive one).

If you're a gamer and use an Xbox or PlayStation 3, forget about it. neither one will tether to a phone or tablet hotspot as they don't support 'ad-hoc' wireless networking.

Google dont make ipads btw lol :D:beer:
I use my phone as our source of wifi. We run the laptop and Wii from it. The wii is actually pretty cool. They cost like

The Wii i have is only used as a media streaming device. often as a backup for non-HD Netflix whenever my internet gets wonky during winter. unfortunately, it does not support HD streaming, only has 480p and was manufactured when kids still gamed on their parents' hand-me-down CRT Televisions. these days some video can look like utter crap if you have a big screen HDTV. the benefit is that it's cheap, has a decent remote, and doesn't need a ton of bandwidth. still miffed it doesn't support Pandora or any radio app. it does have a pretty decent Opera web browser as well.

He probably uses 'iPad' as a generic term for tablets. you can thank Apple for setting that stupid standard. for a long time, most people called MP3 players by any maker an 'iPod'

Lol like here we call vacuum cleaners "hoover" and ball point pens "biro" :D
i didnt realise the wii was such low res'. Our tv is pretty crap though. My phone screen is a lot better.
How do you get opera onto the wii btw? Does it support flash?

Opera is a default browser that i think you download from the Nintendo Wii store (free). it does NOT support Flash (and i wouldn't expect the limited CPU in that thing could handle it) but it will support AF and a wireless keyboard/mouse.

The Wii console's only video output is A/V (via a proprietary port that you use a cable for, often the one shipped with the console). there might be an RF switch for it but not sure. it lacks HDMI out and component video--at least, the one i got used did. if they updated the spec i didn't catch the memo

Yeah the one we have doesnt have hdmi either and its the red white yellow phono output but we use a scart adaptor. Pity it doesnt support flash man.
What i really want is a chromecast but it wouldnt work in our situation (no home wifi)

meh, Chromecast isn't nearly as useful or functional as my Google TV unit. at least, from what i read about it, it's a lot more like Apple TV, an anemic, no app-store toy with only a few services to offer. Google TV has an ethernet port (but my smart TV needs wifi as i'm out of ports on my router)

For the record, trying to use Flash on a Wii unit (that has the exact same CPU/RAM as the Gamecube) would be like running Windows 98SE on a 486SX.

10inch tablet from Ebay for about $100 bucks. To avoid any potential disappointment and frustration you might want to read our forum sticky about cheapo devices like this...

There's some very good reasons why a tablet like this is only $100 and a Samsung Tab or Apple iPad is $500.

it does NOT support Flash (and i wouldn't expect the limited CPU in that thing could handle it)

Wikipedia says:
CPU: PowerPC-based Broadway processor, made with a 90 nm SOI CMOS process, reportedly† clocked at 729 MHz[100]

Flash pre-dates CPUs with a fraction of that power running at 10% of that clock speed.

with it being eBay, it's likely used and/or abused already.

...or it's just a cheap piece of junk like the crap that you like to experiment on from Big Lots and like the crap I deal with as my actual phone.

have you ever tried playing Farmville 2 with a PPC CPU? HD YouTube videos? not pretty. Flash is more than simple animations these days. if it was possible on the Wii, it would probably be a highlight of the console as a gaming/media device. but just try using it these days with that hardware to play the above--which is likely the type of playing that a Wii customer would do. Flash ads might play normally, however.

Macromedia Flash Player 1.x came out when Windows 95 was new. a ton has changed since those days regarding Flash. it is quite clear the Wii isn't up to the task of Flash Player 11 calibre stuff.

Few questions about your device. Do you have AT&T or other carrier? If you have AT&T what data package do you have? Also is your device jail broken?

i don't have AT&T. the only coverage worth a hoot where i live is Verizon. currently the only one locally with working 4G. i've got a rooted phone, yes.
