Contact info on SIM vs on Phone and how to change

Hello, I am a little confused over the contacts on my Note 2.

At first, the phone asked me if I wanted to save the contacts to SIM or phone. I chose SIM because should I need a new phone or whatever, it just seems safer to save to SIM.

But it seems like I can't add new fields to a contact that was saved to SIM? It does not have the "add another field" button. It has no option to add more info.

So, is this normal? If it is normal, then I guess I need to save the contacts to PHONE? I have a couple of contacts saved to PHONE, I am not sure why, and they DO have the option of adding more fields. But I can't figure out how to save my SIM contacts to PHONE? Maybe "Merge with Samsung"? though hesitating to try this.

My final question is that I googled this issue and came upon something that suggested I could create my own fields? For example, I would really like to add a Birthday field, but none exists under "add another field". I would really rather not get into having to use a 3 party contacts manager- I would really like to do this on the contacts application that came with the phone.

Thank you in advance! If this question sounds odd, I am sorry, this is my first smartphone.

As far as moving the contacts from the Sim, open the Contacts app, click settings, import export, import from Sim

It is nicer to have them in the phone memory because of all the choices that you can have.

You can add a certain number of fields from the add field dialogue. You might have to put their birthday under "notes."

Also don't worry about losing your contacts with a new phone. As long as you have a google account you can easily move them from one phone to another. In fact it becomes harder to get rid of them. :)

ok thank you. I am importing them now, but too bad now I have 2 entries for many people. I don't really like the idea of google having my contacts but I guess that is the way it is now!
