I don't know if anyone has noticed this feature but in the Contacts if you tap once on the alphabet list on the right side you go to that letter but if you keep the alphabet pressed and drag to the left you get another sub-menu with the second letter (vowels) for shortlisting.. its like a second level for reaching the contact you wish to get to..
Of course typing the name using the keypad is always there but i just thought of mentioning the feature!
EDIT: BTW the same feature is available in the music player as well
