How do I make a contact icon on the home screen on my S3?

It was easy on the old Evo.

On HTC and Motos you should be able long press on your homescreen and select Shortcut, then Direct Dial etc.

I know on the Samsung GSIII you have to go to the app locker, then to widgets then Direct Dial, etc. I really don't like that extra step with that phone.

A useful, simple one that works.

You can also go to your People or Contacts app that came with your device select a contact. Then under Settings you will find "Place on Home Screen" to create a shortcut there.
