Help Contacts app crashed, contacts no longer appear, how do I get them back?

Hi!

I had a crash of the contacts app this morning, afterwards all contacts were gone. Im using Neatrom Lite 6.3
Here is what I tried.
1. cold reboot
2. remove sim
3. 'show all' options in contacts
4. I even tried to replace contacts2.db with the backup contacts2.db.bak (renamed to contacts2.db and overwritten of course) and rebooted, but nothing.
btw my contacts2.db-back-wal file is 0 byte
5. My contacts are not synced with Google

Oh and in case youre wondering my 'Favorites' are also gone

Any tips?

If you're on a ROM, do you have a nandroid of a previous ROM you can restore your contacts from?

Backup current ROM, restore old ROM, sync contacts to Google, Restore Neatrom.

no, i got this phone second hand with a stock 4.1.2., installed Neatrom 6.3 right after and had it eversince, there was nothing to back up, as the stock 4.1.2. didnt contain any of my data
the only thing to go on are the database files in the root filesystem.
