Help Contacts are labeled "Google" or "Phone"

When I add a contact to my Epic 4G (Galaxy S, model SPH-D700), I'm given a choice regarding where or how to save the contact:

  • Phone or
  • Google
My "Google" contacts are automatically synced with Google Contacts. Are my "phone" contacts automatically synced with anything, or are they just on my phone (and, consequently, not backed up)?

The following information may be relevant to my question: If I open "settings"/"accounts and sync" on my phone, I see two accounts:

  • Facebook and
  • Google.
Here the Google account is associated with my Google contacts, Gmail, and calendar (and my "play books," but I don't know what those are and I don't think I have any). And the Facebook account is associated with my friends on Facebook. I don't have a "phone" account.

Thanks.

Greg

Saving to phone saves to the phone only. It will not be synced/backed up with anything. I say if you use Android you should save all your contacts to Gmail.

When I switched to android I found this out the hard way. All my contacts were synced to phone and I couldn't understand why they didn't sync to new phone. Fortunately for me I still had my other phone or I would've been S.O.L.
