Root Contacts fail to sync

Lagos

I recently replaced my eris for a refurb unit because of trackball issues with my original eris.
The new replacement unit works great, except that my google contacts refuse to properly sync. If you leave auto sync on, the phone will just get stuck in an endless sync loop that keeps trying and trying to synchronize endlessly until the battery fails.

If I do a manual sync, I see that the problem is with google contacts. There is an error that comes up and says that sync is not available at this time and will be back shortly.

Anyone know whats going on and how to fix it?

This phone is rooted with the one click method and running xtrarom

You can fox this way (and this goes for stock as well, by the way):

[optional] from home, settings->accounts & sync. Go into your Google account and uncheck contacts sync to stop it from syncing.

settings->applications->manage applications. You probably want to wait for the list to refresh. Look for "contacts storage". Tap it and then tap the button "clear data"

If you did the optional step 1 above, you can now go back in and re-enable contacts syncing. If you wait out the initial sync, all of your contacts should be there, and the endless loop should stop.

Note: if you have any phone-only contacts (as opposed to Google contacts), this procedure will erase them.

By the way, not that this matters much, but the ROM is called xtrROM, not xtrarom.
