Help Contacts mess

I need help to clean my contacts.

for reason not known to me, I have all contacts quintupled at least. Is there any trick to rid of this multiplication, without losing them? I tried different display options, and none truly works, as I either have too many of same, or lose some I need.
Been struggling with this for several mths already. They all show with a small red icon with a human outline next to them, which is "contacts" logo, I believe. Most of them are "cloned" 5-6 times in a row. It is very time taking to manually delete about a 900 of them.

Using a computer based browser (or mobile browser with computer set as user agent) got to gmail > contacts > more > Find and merge duplicates. I'm curious how the duplicates occurred in the first place. It used to be a common and recurring issue during the Windows Mobile/ Outlook days, but doesn't seem nearly as common with Android. Good luck getting it resolved!

Thanks. just did. it merged TWO duplicates. just 2, out of 1040 contacts on the phone. I also have "synch contacts" unchecked under all of my accounts.

I do use Outlook though for corporate email and calendar.
