contacts sync - what am i doing wrong?

hi

each time i get a new contact, i sync my gmail contacts, hoping that the new contact will then go onto the gmail servers, and then every time i do a wipe, or new phone for instance, all i have to do is sync again and all new contacts will be there. isnt that how it works?

lately when i sync contacts, it wipes my newest data and all i get is the old gmail contact details from years ago, that i would see if i looked at contacts in my gmail pc account. all recent phone numbers are changed back.

im using a rooted desire HD running a kitkat rom.

any idea if im doing something wrong?

thanks a lot

When you add a new contact, make sure you are adding them as a "Google" contact, and not as a "Phone" contact.

If you add them as a "Google" contact, they will sync back to your GMAIL account and you'll have them forever.

If you add the mas a "Phone" contact, the information goes away if you wipe your phone or get a new one.

thats a good shout, so ive just looked deeper into it. if i select 'contacts to display' and choose google rather than 'all contacts' i still have all the new data there. and a quick 'pretend new contact' shows that default is set to set them as a google contact. so........ doesnt look like thats the answer. it just seems that a sync sets it all to the original pc gmail/google contacts rather than the phone google/gmail contacts if that makes sense?

thanks

If you go into the Google Account settings on your phone, is the check box for "sync contacts" checked?

Not sure how to get to it on your phone, but on my GS3 runnings KitKat, its Settings / Accounts / Google / <accountname> .
