contacts vanishing from phone

Contacts are disappearing from my phone. They are still on my Gmail contacts yet syncing doesn't add them to my phone. Thoughts?

Display options - make sure to add contacts without mobile phone numbers?

The option to show only contacts with phone numbers in not checked. My phone has 1708 contacts. My Google account has 1912. Syncing doesn't add them.

to be honest this is the most infuriating part of Android I have found yet. The contact handling is woeful!

No input? How can syncing not sync? Hmmmm......am I the only one who has experienced this?

I found the answer in another thread:

I know this is a little late, but I found a solution to this problem. Go to Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Contacts Storage and hit "Clear Data". Then resync and all should be good. You might want to write down any contacts the phone says aren't in the Google account first though just in case.
