Contacts

Can somebody please tell me where my contacts should or shouldn't be?
I have some in:
Phone
Google (or Gmail, not sure)
T-mobile contact b/u
Sim card
And an option to b/u and restore to and from sd card (I don't know if that means mnt/sdcard or mnt/sdcard/ex_sdcard)
I'm trying to set up direct text and call icons (the picture ids) on a homescreen, but some work and some don't, I guess depending on where the contact is stored.
Some are in more than one place, some aren't.
I'm afraid to just start clicking on contact syncing or import/export to and from here and there.
Last time I tried that, I ended up with 2 or 3 duplicates of most of them in the factory contact list and missing or duplicated ones in my GoContacts.
Right now I have to look in both contact lists (factory and GoContacts) to find some of them.
Why some go here and some go there, I don't know.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank-you Very Much

Lotsa people get confused about this. Simply put, you can have contacts in 3 places:

1. On the sim card. These can be names and numbers only, no addresses, photos etc.
2. In the phone memory only. These can have more complete information. They exist only on the phone.
3. Google (aka Gmail) contacts. These are both on the phone and synchronized to your Gmail account (unless you turn sync off).

When you create or modify a contact you must specify which of the 3 types of contacts you want it to be and so where it's saved. For most people it's easiest and simplest to save all contacts as Google contacts. That way your contacts can have complete info with photos etc. and auto backup to your Gmail account.

In GoContacts, go to 'Settings > Contacts Account' and select which of the 3 types of contacts you want displayed. That will help avoid displaying duplicates.

You phone manual will explain all this further.

I wish I knew how to quote just part of a conversation when I want to reply to just a specific line o.
f someone's post (from a phone).
Anyway, the manual has 13 pages about contacts. It started talking about business accounts and sending name tags to e-mails and all kind of confusing things. So I unchecked everything except Google in Go settings. Now my contact list in GoContacts became about 30 contacts less than what it was, and about that many less than the factory contact list.
But that list has a bunch of duplicates in it, so I didn't know how many I actually lost in Go.
Then, in factory, I noticed that the duplicates were, like you said, because the phone number part of the contact was on the Sim, and the other part of the contact, the e-mail part of it, was in t-mobile back-ups (I think. Or vise a versa. Whatever you said is the way it was).
So anyway, I "merged" those on t-mobile with Go, and then "imported" the others from the Sim card.
In the end, after deleting only 2 duplicates, I have all my contacts with all their info in Google.
And I will make sure I put any new ones there from now on.

I want you to know how much I appreciate you setting me straight on this.
It's been frustrating me for about a year now.
And sorry to talk so much. I'm just a little excited right now that my contacts are finally fixed!
Thanks-again!
