Mike, if you have your contacts saved in multiple places, like both as phone and Google contacts, or you sync facebook contacts which duplicate some other contacts they will show as duplicates until you join them.
No I don't have multiple locations just in contacts, something I am hitting is multiplying them everyday ! I can delete down to one copy of a specific contact next day there are 10 of that one !
