It varies by phone, but usually you would open your Contacts app, press the Menu key on the phone, and select something like Contacts to display from the pop up menu. Make sure the Contacts tab is highlighted at the top of the screen before pressing the Menu key. Not the Phone, Groups, or Favorites tab.
