Considering the speed of these pages as it is, I highly doubt there will be 1500 posts in 30 minutes, aswell as the group posting not growing.

i wonder where they got the beta invites?

I'm assuming it's the same as when gMail started. You get a certain number of invites as being part of the Beta team I suppose.
