Continuous re-booting!!!

My Android Incredible (not so incredible now) 3G has been rebooting now for at least three hours!!

This is not the first time this has happened. I've read something to the effect that I may need to clear all my data, etc., then return to factory settings, then copy my data back to the device.

Is this the best way to do this? I am not incredibly confident I know how to do this and would hate to lose what I've spent over a year to personalize this device!

The first time this happened, I lost a bunch of contacts (they automatically deleted in my Google account due to synching, but didn't know how to prevent this).

How do I safely back-up, and what is necessary to return this baby back to it's original splendor! I was a great device when I first obtained it, now, I'm fit to be tied (maybe if I put it on the train tracks!).

I understand I'm not the only one who has suffered this problem, so maybe a new one due to my having a lemon, or what???:mad::confused::mad:

My Android is STILL CONTINUOUSLY REBOTTING!!!

I am new to this forum and would just like a little help. I read about all the fancy ways to "fix" this problem. I'm not afraid to tell all that I am not a techie:( and a person like me needs specific instructions rather than having to guess and the proper way to back-up, copy data, etc.

Am I supposed to copy over that little card (SM?) to my computer, then re-install everything (I think I know how to do that).

Soooo, at the risk of boring all 'cause I'm not an A-lister when it comes to technology:eek:, please help me with some troubleshooting answers that are in English:confused:

Oh, by the way, I'm steaming as I write this because this guy has been re-starting for the last two hours!!!

p.s. If it helps, it is an Android Incredible - 3G. It will be two years old in June and I've rarely needed to get apps and such since it's Google powered I already had e-mail, etc. I don't even use the Yahoo mail, 'cause it got deleted the first time this re-boot nightmare started, so I use the "mail" app using my Yahoo address.

I hate to say it but talking to the Vendor persons at the Verizon stores is like talking to a 2-year olds so please don't tell me to go there - it's that frustrating.

I'm ready to take this think and see if it can float in the river I'm so mad!!!

Have you tried pulling the battery out and putting it back in and powering up? Sometimes something this simple can fix a phone that's power cycling.

Do you have another battery you can try? That would be a good next step.

If none of that works you may have to try hard resetting your device. That will wipe everything off the phone however. Here are instructions to do a manual hard reset on a droid incredible:

Please note that all data will be deleted from the HTC DROID Incredible as a result of this procedure. This process does NOT delete data stored on the microSD card. We recommend backing up all of your personal data before proceeding.

Turn the power off. If your HTC DROID Incredible is frozen, pull the battery out and reinsert it
Hold the Volume Down button
Hold the Power button until the display turns on
You are now presented with a menu that allows for Fastbook, Recovery, Clear Storage, and Simlock
Select Clear Storage by pressing the Volume Down button
Press and release the Power button to select
Now simply confirm your decision: Volume Up for YES and Volume Down for NO
If you selected YES, all data including third-party applications will be deleted from the HTC DROID Incredible. Once the wipe is complete, the phone will reboot to its factory fresh state.

As above (great job, Josh!) but common experience shows leaving the battery out for 30 to 60 seconds is the way to go before reinserting.

(This is due a semiconductor issue that I'll be happy to explain on request.)

Nice. Good to know. You can explain away if you're really bored :D. Is it because it takes about 30 seconds for the charge in those conductors to fully dissipate?

For the charge in the materials to dissipate, yep.

We call it single event upset, aka latch-up. Basically, semiconductors (processors, memory, iow - computer chips) switch on and off under command of other hardware, firmware, or software.

Every blue moon, a condition hits where things get stuck in a single position (on or off, doesn't matter), instead of being able to switch on and off properly.

Causes any number of screwy issues, so a battery pull (or power cord pull on a home digital appliance) can work wonders.

No luck! So after I've "wiped out" all of my data it will be as if I just got the darned thing! What an idiotic way for a fix, but what the hey!:( Sigh... just my luck. I'm thinking whether or not this baby should just go into the trash compactor because as of now, I've lost all faith in the Android thing! I'm waiting until our computer open forum tonight.

One thing to try is to do a factory reset with the SD card removed. I've had funkiness happen on my DX because something on my SD card was causing it.

But seeing how your device is 2 years old, I'd recommend you to try rooting it and installing a new ROM/Kernel. Or, if you're really adverse to rooting, installing a RUU for your device might take care of it. That will reflash the system to be out of box. A factory reset just clears off user settings. It does not fix system issues, if there are any.

Actually, factory reset clears the operating system cache and that does fix a large number of system issues that can creep up.

Don't give up on Android yet, and if you do, remember that the iPhone has a reset (that fixes things) same as Android.

Once your phone is squared away, do the same thing here as you would for your PC - make a backup.

I recommend MyBackup Pro. Five bucks, pays for itself in saved time and hassle first time you use it.

True...I meant that if a bug developed in /system, a factory reset wouldn't help that. Flashing the RUU wouldn't be a bad idea to just clear everything out.

There are several folders in the SDcard and EMMC that can cause this too and a master reset does not delete them.

My Rezound did this for the 2nd time in 2 weeks yesterday. Went to Verizon store and employee fixed it again and told me there was a software update due out in March to fix this problem. Both times it happened was when I had turned off my phone and rebooted it.

We didn't hear back from you, so this time I've merged your threads, that will help others to help.

In my opinion, if you've done the reset, haven't loaded apps from strange places, and haven't exceeded your phone's storage with apps and data, you may need to have it replaced. That would be a hardware issue, and that happens regardless of brand sometimes.

Can you tell us what steps you have taken, and what you've loaded on to it?
