Rooting your phone only gives you access to protected system files or allows some apps to access these files. Depending on what you want to control, there are different ways to accomplish this. For starters, I would recommend this app:

AirDroid is a great free app that will let you transfer files, manage settings, locate your lost phone or even activate your camera... all through the web. No USB cable needed.
