Help Control Display Name in Contacts (Facebook Sync)

1of42

Lurker
Hi! Android noob here, and already have a problem/question.

Basically, I have a friend on my phone as a contact that has a different last name on Facebook than his real name. I want to sync his contact from Facebook, but when I join the Google and Facebook contacts on the phone, the joined contact automatically displays the Facebook version. I want them joined, but I don't want to see his Facebook contact display name, I want to see the Google/phone contact display name as the primary. How would I do that? And more generally, is there a setting to change which contact name is displayed as primary in the contacts application? (Google/phone vs. Facebook vs. whatever)

(This is on a Galaxy S3, btw.)

I know its late and i don't have an s3 but in your contacts try menu> display options and see if anything comes up like that.

I wish I could help you, but I want to do the same thing and can't figure it out either.

Anyone else?

You can join the contacts, and I THINK the one you have open will be the "default" name. So, if you have John as the Google contact name, and John Smith as the Facebook name, open the Google contact, Edit, then join with the John Smith contact. If it's not that, then it's the other way around. I've had the same issue, and it seemed to work for me - just can't remember exactly which one you open first.

Yea that's what I thought might work too, but that didn't work for me unfortunately. I think what I ended up doing is displaying only the google contacts, then linking the related fb contact then showed fb contacts after selecting to show only those with numbers. That at least gets me mostly to what I want to show, and will probably be different for others who want different information. Unfortunately it seems to also have duplicated google entries for some of my contacts.

I have some duplicate Google contacts too. I had to go through and manually delete them.
