Help Cool Down Mode constantly

Manopka

Newbie
I just purchased a Razr XT912 from a guy on craigslist. The phone works great and is extremely clean. But I keep running into one problem: the phone over heats easily and enters Cool Down Mode. Sometimes it even shuts off after giving me a warning.

So far ive notice that the temperature goes up instantly (up to 140F) when I use data connection to browse the web or download an app. Ive already disabled 4G (even though I live in a city with lots of 4G coverage). I used LTE OnOff to turn the phone to CDMA auto (PRL). This kinda helped but sometimes my phone will randomly still heat up while in my pocket.

EDIT: Just did some testing and my phone was chilling at around 85F. Turned mobile data on and it instantly jump to 158F and Cool Down Mode appeared... Turned mobile data off before cool down mode enacted and within seconds it returned to normal...

sounds like either a bum data chip or something on the phone goes into overdrive when data is enabled. do you have the same problem while connected to wifi (4g on or off)? has it been this way since the start, or have you loaded a bunch of crap on it?

When im on WiFi its perfectly fine. Runs great and everything. Just when I turn data on it freaks out.

And its been doing this since the start. I have some apps on it now but just the basics. no ROMs or anything like that.

I had similar issues with my XT912. Although I don't think as bad as you are describing. I received a new SIM card from verizon last week. So far, no overheating issues.

This was my last shot at fixing the phone. After this (3rd phone received under warranty. 2 for data connections issue; 1 for failed screen - this phone was great, right up until the screen stopped working), Verizon said they would give me a different phone, like the S3. I really want this to work. I love the phone, when it is working.

I have been on Moto phones for several years, including almost 3 years on the OG Droid. I have never had any issues until the Razr Maxx.

Maybe ill try to get a sim card from verizon tomorrow. I went there today and we tried a factory reset and now the phone wont stay on for more than 30 seconds before it says cool down mode and shuts off... but the phone itself isnt even hot...

seVer yeah thats what im kinda afraid of. Im going to try the new SIM thing and maybe try with Motorola since the phone says the kernal was built in June so maybe the 1-year warranty still applies. :/

UPDATE: Took out the SIM card and the phone loaded right up without any heat issues. Been playing this YouTube video with WiFi for 30+ minutes on HQ and no over heating issues. never even gets past 80F. Definitely going into Verizon in the morning.

Likewise, after 4 SIMM cards my RAZR MAXX still overheats and is hot to the touch. I place it on cool surfaces like desktops to keep it under 100 degrees.

I never liked my RAZR MAXX, especially the small type font that is hard to read. My solution was to buy a Note II which has readable type and runs cool. The Note II is awesome and I'm in love with it.

Well thats the weird thing. Mine isnt hot to the touch what so ever. The verizon rep said it might be an issue with the temp sensor. i hope not.

Do you see anything odd in Settings/Battery?

(I just *love* seeing "66 degrees F" at the top of my Note II screen instead of the 100+ on my RAZR MAXX)

Before my RAZR MAXX I had an HTC Rezound that liked to run at a sizzling 125 degrees with the Notification light flashing green-orange-green-orange-green-orange . . . just before it went into shutdown/cooldown. That happened even immediately after a factory reset, so there was no possibility that a rogue app or improper setting was causing the problem.

And before that I had a series of *3* LG Spectrums that liked to run at 113 degrees even immediately after factory resets. WTF?

What does the Task Manager in the "System Tuner" app show for CPU% and Used CPU% if you turn on "System" and "Kernel" on the toolbar at the bottom of the screen?

CPU % jumps around usually around 5-20%.

I noticed something very stange...if its plugged in the temperature is great even with data turned on. but the second I remove the charger the temperature jumps up to 120+. Sounds like an issue with the sensor?

EDIT: also got a new SIM card this morning. Didnt help at all

Yep. That's probably the reason the seller got rid of the phone. Sorry about your luck. If it isn't actually hot then it's likely a hardware issue and I don't think there's a way to bypass the sensor

It might be bad charging circuitry.

It might be corrupt battd battery control daemon kernel software - re-flashing the phone might fix that.

It might be . . . many other possibilities . . .

yeah. well when i put the serial into the motorola repair thing on the website it approved a repair and said it wouldnt cost me anything (besides shipping the phone there). The only thing im slightly worried about is me sending it there then getting an email saying they need a proof of purchase.
