Cool driving app

There's actually been two previous posts about this app, but they just kinda laid there. I saw this on the news this morning and had to share.

The app is called iOnRoad and it's only available on the Android Operating system currently. Oh yeah, it's free!

It provides collision detection and lane detection like the high end automobiles have now (BMW, Mercedes). Get too close to the car in front of you, alarm! Drive out of your lane, alarm! Too cool.

It's only supported by a hand full of handsets in via the Market currently. But the developer provides a link to the APK if you want to side load this app on any handset / tablet and give it a try.

I can see how this app would be cool, but I don't think I would like it.

I valet and can't stand all the extra beeps the lux brands make. I guess I tend to drive close to most things tho...

How precise is it (i.e. how many feet/inches away before it starts beeping)? Seems most car companies go with 1.5-2 feet in all directions with a little extra distance in the back.

I honestly haven't used it yet. I rained all day here and one of the rating comments I read stated rain reduced it's efficiency. Gonna try to give it a spin tomorrow afternoon on the way home from work.

I don't think it's for parking, just while driving (immanent crash detection).

It just amazes me that we can get in a free app what costs $1000+ as an option on a new car. I'm absolutely positive it's not as accurate, but it's still pretty cool.
