Copilot 8 Questions - Prior to purchase

How good is the map coverage and how up to date are the maps compared to Tomtom, Navigon etc ?. I will be traveling around the UK.

What happens on the Desire if you receive a call during navigation ?

How quick is the GPS pickup ?

Hi an welcome.

Maps are pretty up to date on the journeys that I take around Somerset and Bristol areas even down as far as Hampshire, I haven't had any problems.

Not had a call come in at any crucial time, did have a text message which over ruled the CoPilot software until I read / cancelled it.

GPS is usually set within 5 secs from cold

I havent had to pay any additional for any of the updates which there has been a few since I purchased in June this year.

Live traffic is really good, it will use 3G to tell you of problems either in your local area or on your journey. I think it also re-routes you should the snarl up be on your main route.

I was very impressed with the service when I was travelling back from Hampshire a couple of weekends ago. I will look to buy the service again once the period comes up.

I love this app. It has never let me down driving around South Australia. Accuracy is better than the Garmin but of course it lacks some of the bells and whistles of a dedicated satnav device. Very clear display and the spoken directions are clear and concise through my handsfee bluetooth kit.
Like has been said, when starting Copilot turn on the network connection and the GPS and it finds the current location in 5 secs. Then immediately turn of the network if you do not need it and only have a small data allowance(200mb) like me. It never crashes on me with network off.
Love it.

Took the plunge and purchased it yesterday so far I'm impressed.

Installed on my 2.1 Virgin Desire.

Can I confirm that the text to voice option for street names etc is only currently available for Windows mobile devices ?

Text to voice with street names works out the box, you just need to select *PICO* eng-gbr from the Language & Voice option.

Hi,
I've also been struggling to get 'voice' for CoPilot 8, and don't see Pico as an option under the Language and Voice menu settings in CoPilot - there are many other languages, but not that.

Is there something I need to do in the OS to enable it? I can hear the pico 'demo' voice when listening to an Example under the Text-to-speech settings.

Little off topic, but...

To el_caro,

I'm going to assume (being in South Australia and using a Desire) that you're on Telstra?

Not sure if you've read the latest or not, but you can now get a 3GB data pack for $29 ;) (ie, replace your $39 cap + $10 data pack with $39 cap + $29 data pack, = $68/mth for $400 calls + 3GB data ;)) )

I have CoPilot and a handsfree bluetooth kit but when the voice speaks through the phone a second later it comes through the bluetooth speaker, am sure if you turn the volume off on the phone I will not here anything or maybe I am doing something wrong

Regards

Main problems with Google navigation...
1) No ahead planning - you download data as you need it
2) Data charges!
3) No POIs!
4) Poor UI compared to a dedicated sat nav.

1/ So wont spot accidents/roadworks etc?
2/ true pain in the ass :)
3/ Points of Interest? i assume?
4/ Meh :)

I think #1 is the main thing if thats what you mean...so i guess google wont alutomatically alter route if heavy traffic?

Hi,

I have just clicked "check for updates" within the program on my desire, but it says no update available, where did you obtain yours from ?

It is not unfair. The European maps for co pilot are top of the line navteq maps ALK (copilot) buys from navteq one the best map companies. The US maps are old ALK made ones that are about 8 years old and garbage.

ALK is expected to offer proper maps for about $30 once they have enough US subscribers. ther $5 entry fee is a bait and switch for extra charge decent maps next year.

Thanks, that makes much better sense :)
