copy outlook contacts to android

when I export my outlook contacts to gmail, it asks if I want to merge duplicates. When I do, and my android (Samsung Galaxy S4) syncs, it wipes out the ringtones, contact pics, etc. that I had in my phone. Is there a way to sync the gmail contacts without losing the ringtones, pics, etc. set for the existing contacts on the phone?

Are the existing contacts google contacts or phone contacts? If you put a ringtone on a phone contact and have a duplicate in google, and tell it to eliminate duplicates, it's wiping out the phone contacts - and your ringtones, pics, etc.
