Copyright of print publications to application how does it work.

What are the copyright laws when taking information from a print published reference and putting it on an app. Is it similar to print published information and plagiarism? Do I need to cite references?

I'm no lawyer, but I'd think it's exactly the same. You're using someone else's work so appropriate credit should be given. If you stand to make money from the app then it's probably also wise to seek formal permission to include the info.

I am not a lawyer either, but have dealt wit copyright protected content for years.

Generally speaking, if you are using the information in a scholarly or editorial fashion, you need to cite the reference and credit the author/publisher. If you are using it commercially, then you absolutely need permission ... and it should be permission in writing ... from the holder of the copyright.

For example, if you are reviewing a book, then you may cite passages to support your review/opinion. If you are compiling an app that lists authors who write in a specific genre or are all left handed redheads and include samples of their work, you must give appropriate credit. If you are teaching grammar and you use the work as an example of style, again, you need to cite and credit. In these cases it may not be necessary to get direct permission from the author/owner.

It is always best to consult legal advice in these cases as the laws will vary by jurisdiction. If you continue without permission, you may be speaking to a lawyer in a less pleasant manner. At best, they will ask you to cease and desist and pull anything you have already done. At worst ... you don't want to know. ;)
