Help Correct way to install systemless xposed

Hi. With invaluable help from this forum, I recently managed to root my Moto e 2nd gen LTE. After reading about custom ROMs and xposed, I want to try the latter. I have marshmallow which means I should be able to have 'systemless xposed'.

These two threads suggest that the process is quite easy:
https://devs-lab.com/how-to-install-system-less-xposed-in-android.html
http://www.howtogeek.com/263663/how...k-for-frustration-free-android-customization/

I've installed 'xposed installer' without any problem. Both tutorials then say I have to download xposed and they provide a link. However, both links are to this page:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/unofficial-systemless-xposed-t3388268

This page tells me that it's essential to have something called Magisk. Is that correct? It seems odd that neither devs-lab nor howtogeek mentioned this.

To add to my confusion, if I open the xposed installer on my phone, there's a simple 'install/update' button I could tap to get systemless (or official) xposed. Should I just use this method?

If anyone could explain the correct procedure I'd be much obliged. Thank you.
