Help Corrupt OS, stuck in recovery, how to transfer files to PC?

Zyperspace

Lurker
An app corrupted my LineageOS 18.1 OnePlus 7 Pro for some reason, which means I need to factory reset it. However, before doing so I wish to save my data, and have been unsuccessful so far. I have been looking into transferring via the ADB pull command, but with no success, only getting errors and 0 files transferred.

ADB debugging is enabled and I'm out of ideas. I just want my photos and files...

Thanks beforehand, sorry if I sound frustrated, but this came at an unfortunate time for me

if you have lineage os, you have twrp correct?

if you have twrp, you should have made a nandroid backup, yes? if you made a nandroid backup, you can then just restore the backup and all is good.

what app would "corrupt" your device? how is the device "corrupted"? what exactly happened? can you get to recovery?

in order to help you, we need as much info as you can give us.

First off, it's been almost a year I got Lineage, through the sheer force of using tutorials. This is not my strong side. As far as I can tell, I don't have TWRP right now, my recovery is a simple purple layout. I'm 100% sure I never got a backup made, but I can reinstall TWRP and the OS later, right now I just want to save my data first.

But thank you for broadening my horizon, I'll definitely look into Nandroid backup in the future, to avoid these sort of situations again.

Exiting a specific app froze my entire phone indefinitely, the screen would stay lit seemingly endlessly, and only holding Power button + Volume up seemed to do anything. This happened twice, while the second time, I was no longer able to boot to the OS without it failing due to it being "corrupted".

Oh and the error message is as follows:

"Can't load Android system. Your data may be corrupt. If you continue to get this message, you may need to perform a factory data reset and erase all user data stored on this device."

yeah you are screwed. i think that your data is lost. but if you can install twrp, i would reflash lineage with it and then make a nandroid backup. after rooting installing a custom recovery, twrp, should always be the first thing that you do along with making a nandroid backup. twrp creates a backup file that you can copy and keep a copy on both your phone (sd card) and on your pc.

i would not do a hard reset especially if you can get twrp installed first. if you can't get twrp installed in this state then you can try a hard reset. you might have to flash a firmware update then doing a hard reset.....but i'm not familiar with your phone......so lets hope a hard reset will work for you.

and like i said i think your data is lost. there are some programs out there that claim they can recover data, but i think majority of them are scams so be careful as most of them are not free.

Cheers, thanks for the help anyway. I temporarily got into TWRP recovery and tried the backup feature, and it failed every time.
So your conclusion is correct. I'll be more careful in the future, and also make Nandroid backups, to save the time spent on reinstalling everything. I did at least make a copy of all my most important files a few months ago, I should just do that more often :/

just make nandroid backups more often......lol

let us know if a reset worked or not. like i said you might need to flash a firmware update. not sure how that is done for your phone.

I got LineageOS flashed correctly, then realized I had no GApps. Tried again, using OpenGApps instead of MindTheGapps, and it worked like a charm. The Lineage OS recovery is still the standard, I'll get to work on making TWRP the standard one when I've got the time, so I can make frequent backups like you recommended. Thanks once again for your quick assistance
